Frank Fraser - 2007

May 16/07

September 8 - Parts For Trucks 200 - Scotia Speedworld - CARQUEST Tour season finale

Craig Slaunwhite was back behind the wheel of the 23f this weekend, in somewhat of an audition for Frank Fraser - who missed Slaunwhite's performance in the car at Riverside a few weeks ago. Slaunwhite put on a stellar performance in the car leading over 100 laps. A tire change during the mid-race break saw the car's handling slip away along with the lead...A late-race pit stop saw another tire change that helped Slaunwhite burn through the field in the closing laps, moving to the top four with 20 to go...While challenging for the third spot he spun entering turn three.

You'd think that might bother a car owner, but not the Fraser's..."We've got no problem there," said Frank. "He was trying to get a spot and you can't blame a guy for that. He did everything right. We're thrilled."

Sounds like the old "Checkers or Wreckers" philosophy to me...

Presently (September 10) the team is unsure whether they will compete in any more events this year or what the 08 season will see; stay tuned for updates...

September 2 - Peterbilt 250 - New Brunswick Int'l Speedway - open event

Frank Fraser took the wheel of the 23f car this week, and had a great ride "until I screwed up" according to Frank. With 40 of the best pro stocks from the Maritimes and New England on hand, Fraser won his qualifying heat and started on the pole for the big race. Maine's Scott Chubbuck got the jump on the start and led lap one, but Frank regained the point on the next circuit and led for 61 more laps before drifting off the asphalt and spinning, having to restart at the rear. "It went downhill from there," said Frank. "We got tangled up in someone else's wreck later on, and that was that." Don't be too hard on yourself Frank...

August 25 - CARQUEST Tour 100 - Raceway Park - CARQUEST Tour event

The Fraser crew had a good car, running in the top 10 all race. A seventh place finish moved them to eighth in the series point standings. The series season finale is September 8 at Scotia Speedworld, but not before the crew heads for the Peterbilt 250 at NBIS this weekend...

August 19 - International 100 - River Glade Speedway (sportsman race)
August 19 - Antigonish Mall 100 - Riverside International Speedway (CARQUEST Tour event)

A rainout at Riverside Speedway Saturday forced the Fraser crew to be in two places at once Sunday. Frank went to River Glade Speedway for the International 100; brake problems brought an early end to the day for the former six-time champion of the event.

The pro stock went to Riverside with Craig Slaunwhite behind the wheel; he drove a clean smart race and brought the No. 23 home in the sixth spot - advancing to ninth in the series point standings.

August 11 - Atlantic CAT 250 - Scotia Speedworld, NS - PASS North event

It was an up and down day for Frank, starting off good by making good progress during practice - and feeling confident they had a good raceable car for the feature. Early on they made forward progress from their starting spot, running as high as seventh before bending a panhard bar. After that the car was a handful. They managed to stay on the lead lap for the first half, but lost a lap in the pits trying to make the car better. "We went back out there to make some laps, but the rear end broke with about 20 to go, so that finished our day," said Frank Fraser, who was finished 17th. Mike Rowe won the race.

Next up is the last stop at Riverside International Speedway for the season, this Saturday (August 18) for the Antigonish Mall 100 - round 8 of 10 on the 07 CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour. Sunda, August 19 will see Frank return to his racing "home" at River Glade Speedway for the International 100, driving a sportsman car formerly owned by Shawn Turple. After that is PEI on the 25th, then NBIS for their 250 September 2, then the CARQUEST Tour season finale September 8th at Scotia Speedworld...

August 4 - Parts for Trucks 100 - Riverside International Speedway, NS - CARQUEST Tour event

Frank was 21st in time trials, at an average speed of 89.576 mph, just 0.677-seconds behind Time Trial winner Rollie MacDonald. He went on to finish sixth in his heat race, and 13th in the feature. At the end of the day, he gained one spot in the point standings - moving to 12th overall.

Next up: The Atlantic CAT 250 at Scotia Speedworld August 10-11, a PASS North race.

July 28 -CARQUEST 100 - New Brunswick International Speedway, NB - CARQUEST Tour event

The night didn't last long for the 23 car; the rear end gears broke on lap 17 - forcing them to park the car for the night, finishing last on the field and dropping to 13th in the point standings.

"There were som many parts alying around in there when we took the cover off, we figured we'd ruin the rear end if we tried to fix it and missed something," said Fraser. "It wasn't worth the risk."

Fraser is back on track August 4 at Riverside Int'l Speedway for round 7 of 10 on the 07 CARQUEST Tour...

July 22 -IWK 250 - Riverside International Speedway, NS - PASS North event

The race was originally set for Saturday July 21 in the evening, but heavy rain forced it to be postponed until Sunday afternoon - which was the first issue for Frank. Being his first 250-lap race in years, the fact that it was supposed to be held in cooler evening conditions was a good thing. The hot sunny Sunday afternoon was perfect for racing, but by halfway Frank was feeling a tad tired. Lonnie Sommerville climbed in the 23 car at the halfway break and finished the race - which proved to be a battle of survival rather than speed. The 23 car finished the race eighth of the 30 that started - and 10 that finished...

Next up: July 28 at NBIS - round 6 of 10 on the 07 CARQUEST Tour...

July 7 - Lucas Oil 100 - Scotia Speedworld, Halifax, NS

Frank was not happy with his run at Scotia Speedworld. "We just missed something," said Fraser. "And we never did find it." Frank made several pit stops trying to cure the handling issue he was having, to no avail. He ended up with an 11th place finish in the feature, and moved to eighth in series point standings.
Frank's next race is the IWK 250 at Riverside International Speedway near Antigonish on July 21.

June 30 - Parts for Trucks 100 - Raceway Park, PEI
Round four of 10 for the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour saw Frank return to one of his favourite tracks in the Maritimes, albeit with fresh asphalt on the oval. Frank was in the top five in practice all day, won his heat race and finished seventh in the feature - moving him to 10th in the point standings - just 40 points out of fifth...

Frank ran as high as second in the feature; if he'd had the car then he'd had in the early laps he felt he could have challenged race winner Bobby White. In the opening laps Fraser was hooked up on the high groove, advancing from his 10th-place start to third in just 18 laps. Then an altercation with Greg Proude resulted with Fraser hitting the concrete wall flat, bending the suspension parts on the car.

"The car was real good at the start," said Fraser, "and amazingly not that bad after we were walled and bent the car."

"I tried Bobby on those restarts just to see if we had anything for him but he was quicker then," said Fraser.

All in all it was a good day for the 23f Mountain Wild Blueberries team with the crew and driver satisfied they're making gains every week. On to round five for the CARQUEST Tour next Saturday, July 7, at Scotia Speedworld...

June 23 - Irving Max Pro Stock 100 - New Brunswick Int'l Speedway
An off-weekend for the CARQUEST Tour, and fresh off a great run at NBIS the previous weekend, Frank made his way back to the Geary woods for round two of the "Best of the Best" series.

Frank started the race near the back of the 18-car field and raced his way to second before his tires went away. He finished fifth.

We ran the whole 100 laps, finished on the lead lap, and weren't tired," said Fraser. "So we accomplished what we set out to do. So we'll take it and look forward to the Tour race on PEI next weekend."
That would be June 30 for the grand-reopening of Raceway Park - compete with new asphalt.

June 16 - CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour - Parts For Trucks 200
"I'm starting to feel like I've got my speed back," said Frank Fraser in a telephone conversation this week. "The car was really good at NBIS; it was the driver that made the mistake that saw us finish ninth."

After starting 14th, Fraser was running fourth on lap 38 when he drifted off the track edge and hit the dirt. After numerous pit stops to effect repairs, he restarted at the back of the 25-car field and finished ninth.

Fraser's No. 23 recorded fast time in two of three afternoon practice sessions and also ran the fastest lap recorded during the 100 lap feature - of all the cars.

"It boils down to stamina," said Fraser. "It was a long green flag run and I just lost concentration when I went off the track. I expected it would take a few races to get back in shape for the longer runs - and it is."

Wayne Smith won the race, with Shawn Turple second and Shawn Tucker third.

With the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour off this weekend, Frank will return to NBIS Saturday for the Irving Max 100.

2007 June 9 - CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour - Pioneer Coal 100
Frank qualified 16th on the 33-car field, finished second in the first heart race, and started 13th on the grid for the feature race. He moved toward the front pack, running as high as eighth, before the power steering went on the car. The car was tough to steer the rest of the race but he did manage to finish in the same position he started - 13th. Fraser now sits 18th in the series point standings - only 71 markers behind points leader Mike MacKenzie - the winner of the Pioneer Coal 100.

Frank is back behind the wheel Saturday June 16 at New Brunswick International Speedway for round three of the 2007 CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour.

2007 May 26 - CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour - Lucas Oil 100
Frank's new No. 23 had brake and carburetor problems all afternoon - meaning they missed most of the practice session - frustrating to the team because the car worked good when they practiced Thursday...They got it figured out in time to make a couple laps in the last session. Fraser drew 31 in time trial order - his fast lap was 14.946-seconds - putting him in the seventh starting spot in the second heat; he finished fifth - just outside the top four transfer spot. So he had to run the B Feature, where he finished second behind Daryl Mahar - good enough to start 20th on the 26-car grid for the feature. The crowd gave Fraser a warm welcome every time his name was mentioned. The feature saw Frank move to the outisde of the track and make some passes, but being out and deep in the pack also caused him to need to spin to miss a couple altercations that happened in front of him. Twice he came from the rear; on lap 24 something flew off the car on the frontstretch... a few laps later he was in the pits - the engine had started running rich and the car was leaking fuel. The 23f was done for the night.

"We were having fun," said Fraser, "and that's what this is all about."

Fraser's next race is June 9 at Riverside Speedway for the Pioneer Coal 100 - round 2 of 10 on the 07 CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour.

2007 May 20 - Fraser fans will be pleased to learn that Frank Fraser is making his return to the driver's seat of a stock car this year, starting next Saturday, May 26 at Scotia Speedworld with the season opener for the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour.

At 62 years of age, Frank wonders some days if he's crazy, but most days is convinced he's still got some excitement left for Maritime race fans. The biggest question he's got of himself is how his stamina will be after being out of a car for most of the last 10 years...

"That will be the key," said Fraser. "I know I can be quick for a few laps, but we'll have to see how long it lasts once we start the season. If I can be competitive enough to have some fun, we'll keep at it."

Fraser's familiar No. 23 is being sponsored by Mountain Wild Blueberries, George E. Collins & Sons, Cat Shack and Atlantic Cat.

The SFR shop will field a second car for young Shawn Turple, who will pilot the No. 0 entry for the the third season.
