Scott Fraser Racing Memorial Fund
The Scott Fraser Racing Memorial Fund was established in March 2004. Scott's family and friends knew
immediately at the time of Scott's passing that "something to do with racing" was what would mean the most
to Scott, hence the fund was established. There was no definite plan in the beginning but support through donations from
fans, friends and fellow racers was overwhelming and on April 26, 2004 it was announced that the
racecar Scott was preparing for himself to drive in '04 would be fielded by Scott's family and team in two races this year.
They were putting a young promising driver behind the wheel to give him a chance to pursue his racing dreams.
The philosophy was simple.
"A lot of people gave Scott a lot of breaks financially...that helped get to where he was because we didn't have the money
to get there on our own," said Frank Fraser, Scott's dad. "We thought we would try and do the same for someone else."
There was no real certainty in the weeks following Scott's death that the plan would indeed become a reality because Frank Fraser was adamant
that such an endeavour had to be a team decision. There were some holdouts but as preparation of the racecar began all warmed up to the idea.
Scott Fraser had built the racecar himself in the family race shop in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. He won three major races in it during the summer of 2003 before
wrecking it at an October event in North Carolina. He had ordered most of the parts necessary for reconstruction prior to his death.
The driver pick for 2004 was a little easier as Scott Fraser himself had identified to those closest to him
a local sportsman driver, Shawn Turple, as an emerging talent.
"We didn't want just anybody in the car," said Frank Fraser. "The biggest thing some of the boys (team members) were concerned about was that
the someone we put in the car wouldn't be quick. They had to be able to make the car look good."
The racecar was painted the familiar black and yellow paint scheme that had become synonomous with Scott Fraser in the 90s. The racecar was
numbered SFR (Scott Fraser Racing).
Turple's first official race was at Scott Fraser's home track, Scotia Speedworld, also Turple's home track. It was a 250-lap international event featuring
29 of the best short track racers from New England and the Maritimes. Turple started seventh and finished eighth - a very respectable showing indeed.
The second of the two races promised Turple will come September 5 at New Brunswick International Speedway (Geary, NB). Scott Fraser won the event
in 2003 and scored the biggest payday ever for a Maritimes racer by winning a whopping $24,500.
Frank Fraser also plans to race the SFR car before the end of the 2004 season.
SCOTT FRASER RACING MEMORIAL FUND COMMITTEE
The Scott Fraser Racing Memorial Fund is being administered by a committee comprised of Frank Fraser, Jim Hall and Dan MacLeod. Hall and
MacLeod were both good friends of and advisors to Scott Fraser.
THE FUTURE
Although there is no definite plan for the future at present, there is one certainty: Scott Fraser's racing
