FRANK FRASER COLLECTS CHECKERS AT RIVERGLADE - AGAIN
RIVER GLADE, N.B. (Aug. 19) - Frank Fraser, Sr. (Scott's dad) can still bring the fans of Riverglade Speedway to their feet with excitement. The past two weekends have proven that. The 55-year-old "retired" racer accepted a challenge where any driver who won the Dale Earnhardt Memorial and the Outlaw 100 events at the tight 1/4-mile track would collect a $1,000 bonus.
Fraser did just that, winning one race (Earnhardt Memorial) in son Frank, Jr.'s Sportsman car and the other (Outlaw 100) in son Scott's late model (pro stock) race car.
After nearly lapping the entire field on a couple of occasions in the Outlaw 100, Fraser hit an exhaust pipe that had fallen from another car and the subsequent restart saw his lead taken away by long-time rival Cy Harvey.
"The car got real loose," said Fraser, a native of New Brunswick who spent over 25 years dominating races at Riverglade. "We were about 1/2 lap into the restart when Scott told me on the radio we had a flat tire."
Knowing the win would slip away if he pitted under green, Fraser held on to second spot under less than perfect conditions until a caution with just 23 laps remaining gave him the break he needed.
Charging into the back pit area for a tire change, Fraser rejoined the field just as the green flag flew - nearly 1/2 lap behind the field. 12 laps later, after an exhibition of classic Frank Fraser, he retook the lead from Harvey.
"This track has been awful good to us," said Fraser, who retired from full-time driving four years ago.
