ANOTHER TOP FIVE FOR FRASER (3/24/01)
LAKELAND, Fla. - Scott Fraser scored his second top five finish in the American Speed Association's (ASA) young 2001 season with a fifth-place in the Florida 200 at USA International Speedway in Lakeland on Saturday night. By virtue of being the only rookie of 15 in the field to finish on the lead lap, he will move into the ASA Rookie of the Year point standing lead.
"We were real tight the whole race," said Fraser, from Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. "We tried adjusting the panhard bar in our pit stop but it didn't make much difference."
Fraser's No. 00 King Freight Lines/ King Racing Chevrolet started the race in the fifth spot and never ran lower than seventh in the 36-car field. His strong run earned him three of 10 post-race contingency program awards: Penske Shocks, VP/ Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Race and top rookie for the ATI Performace Products Award.
Mike Garvey, from Minnesota, was the winner of the event, followed by Butch Miller, Coopersville Michigan, Toby Porter, Greenville, South Carolina and Joey Clanton, Stockbridge, Georgia.
Fraser holds onto ninth-place in national ASA point standings but closes the gap on those ahead of him, just 18 markers out of fifth spot and 106 behind the leader, Butch Miller.
Fraser and the series move to South Boston Speedway in South Boston, Virginia on April 7 for event four of 20.
