ROOKIE LEADER FRASER FACES THE UNKNOWN AT CEDAR RAPIDS
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – After making major changes to his No. 00 King Racing Chevrolet but not being able to test, Scott Fraser hopes to hit the correct setup at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Saturday.
Fraser, of Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, goes into the fifth race of the 2001 season in the American Speed Association (ASA) with a 66-point lead over Chris Wimmer in the contest for rookie of the year. After three top-five finishes in the first four races, Fraser is also in the thick of the race for the overall ASA championship. He currently rests in seventh place in the standings, only 88 behind leader Butch Miller, a three-time ASA champion.
Yet with those great numbers, Fraser hopes to improve at the tricky half-mile oval, which has been dominated by veteran Mike Garvey for the past two years.
"The car just hasn't been right this season, so we made some drastic changes after the race at South Boston, Va., at the first of the month," said Fraser. "We've been too tight in every race and just haven't been able to correct the problem. But after we made the changes we haven't had a chance to test. This has been one of the latest springtimes on record in Eastern Canada, so we couldn't very well test with snow on the tracks at home.
"We've thrown so much at the car in the way of changes over this break that we really don't have a clue as to what to expect when we get on the track at Cedar Rapids."
Fraser also knows he could be at a huge disadvantage because many of his competitors have raced at Cedar Rapids numerous times.
"We have no notes to follow, so we'll just basically work at setup during practice," said Fraser. "We've been getting a lot of attention and our fan support has been super. We're very grateful for all that but I want our fans to have even more to pull for. The top-five finishes and our position in the points standings...well, all that is great but we want to get back to what we're used to doing – winning! We won't be really happy until we can figure out what we're missing and can put the car in victory lane."
Saturday's race will start at 3 p.m. (EDT), televised live on TNN.
